Spruce it up!

Most of us spend a large majority of our day at the workplace.

Just as the nature of the job is important so is the environment in which we work. A cluttered desk or workstation, doesn't speak much about the worker. It may give the initial impression of being hardworking but can also show you're unable to organise and manage your tasks effectively. Whether it's old papers, files, snacks to eat or even gifts — everything must be placed in such a way that it's easy to find and looks neat.

Avoid adding to the clutter
This may seem hard intially, but just requires a few extra minutes each day. If you get a letter that is unimportant, feel free to discard it. If there's something of no use to you, give it away. Remember the more junk you collect, the more dirt and dust you will be attracting.

Make divisions
Utilise your drawers and cabinets to the maximum. Keep all the important things in your top drawer like bank statements and urgent assignments to be completed. Store all papers in specially marked files or folders.

Don't eat at your desk
While you may no have enough time for an official lunch break, munching at your desk is a strict no-no. You will be left with food crumbs in your keyboard, and even food stains or smells around your desk. It's best to eat somewhere else. If possible, step outside your office. If you must eat at your place, ensure you put plenty of paper and clean up after you're done.

Reduce the number of items
It's always good to personalise your desk by putting up pictures of loved ones, posters, and little curios. However, having too many of them can be a form of distraction. Only keep a couple of personal items on your desk so that you have plenty of space for all the essential work items.

Maintain a list
When at work, it's very easy for one to get carried away with all the million things to do. Hence, it's best to keep a diary or a to-do list. At the start of the day, list everything that needs to be done and slowly tick things off the list. That way you will know just how much is left.

Make use of containers
Go to any stationary store and purchase some containers. You get special ones to hold various office supplies, paper clips, rubber bands and pens. Get some tools like a letter opener, scissors, stapler, puncher and sticky tape and store them together. Use letter holders to store all your important mail.
