Hair styling simplified for you!

Equip yourself with some basic knowledge about hair techniques before you perch yourself in the hair stylist's chair.

It's important to understand all about hair techniques before you land up at the salon for a treatment. Interestingly, every individual's hair reacts differently to colouring, perming or even straightening treatments. Understand the health of your hair and then experiment. We give you a lowdown on some basic facts about hair treatments.

Hair colouring:
You may hear terms such as crown colouring, global colouring, highlights and lowlights. These terms are simple to understand — crown is the crown of the head, so when colouring of hair strands is done only on the crown (where greying usually starts first), it's called crown colouring. Global is when colouring is applied all over the head. Highlights are what show on the strands and lowlights show colour rather subtly. It must be wisely understood that basic health of hair is different for every individual. Thus, while some hair type may absorb colour more readily, some other hair types may take longer exposure to show colour changes. Bleaching especially should be opted with due understanding of how well the hair would react to it.

Hair extensions:
You've seen Bollywood heroines flaunting long hair in some scenes and then changing their look to that of a tom boy with short hair. How do they do that? Moving away from ugly wigs, many of them opt for hair extensions. Hair extensions are lengths of either real or synthetic hair that can be affixed close to the scalp. When well-matched in colour and texture, and professionally applied by a competent extensionist, hair extensions mix in and move naturally with your own hair, making it difficult to tell you are wearing them. They can provide volume, extend hair, and add highlights or lowlights without the harshness of colouring your own hair. Some extensions can be worn continuously for up to 3 months before requiring maintenance.

Re-bonding:
Re-bonding is a chemical hair treatment that can make your hair look straight. It is often a permanent treatment and can turn out to be an expensive procedure. Each type of hair has a natural bond. Curly or wavy, are the result of natural bonds that give the hair its physical quality. The cream softener or relaxant used in the re-bonding treatment breaks the natural curly hair structure. Then a neutraliser bonds the structure again and makes the hair straight. In simpler terms, the re-bonding treatment changes your natural hair structure and restructures it.

Once your hair is straightened you have to touch up the new growth every three months, six months or a year, depending upon your growth. Honestly, the untouched up part of the hair looks different from re-bonded hair and that's when the entire look seems unkempt.

Perming:
Most women with straight hair have always wanted to go for a large curl look. Perming came to the rescue for them as a permanent wave, commonly called a perm, which is a chemical and/or thermal treatment of hair to make waves and curls. The word 'permanent' is used because the curl does not straighten out after a wash. However, when the new hair grows, the hair that has not been waved looks different from the rest.

Hair weaving:
Hair weaving is the science of addition of hair to the scalp by weaving or braiding of human hair or synthetic hair. It is also called Hair integration or Hair Intensification. The hair is woven to the root area of the person's hair so that it grows naturally with the hair. The drawback of the process is that it stresses existing hair and may cause it to fall out.
